Afroreggae

Afroreggae is a Brazilian hybrid organisation - NGO, cultural group, percussion band and social movement - working with the poorest and most violent communities in Rio. They have one central aim: to take young people out of the drug trade through arts based activities that reclaim local knowledge and local culture as a means for empowerment, development and identity transformation. What lessons can be learned from novel forms of social organisation that produce social policy from below and challenge traditional markers of social identity? What are the challenges and potentials involved in translating the experience of Afroreggae to different contexts?Paul Heritage is Professor of Drama and Performance at Queen's Mary, University of London, Sandra Jovchelovitch is Director of the MSc inS ocial and Cultural Psychology, LSE, Anderson Sa is the lead singer of Afro Reggae and the featured subject of the documentary Favela Raising A short film by renowed documentary-maker Nick Francis will be shownduring the event.
